Expat Working in Malta
Will I Be Able to Work in Malta--or Not?
I feel sorry for anyone associating with me now--Mr. S. and especially my two girls. And myself.
My daughters (who I feel are my two best friends) and I had a really good weekend. We just hung out. B decided to clean out R's fridge and throw out stuff that was old. Some of the things I'm donating to a school of archaeology because the eat-by dates were from BCE (before common eating).
In fact, there were some things things that were so hard to scrape off from that fridge that we actually drew blood from it.
Anyway, today it's Monday morning and I tried very hard--according to very strict instructions--to not wake up or disturb daughter R who had to get up early and go to work.
So this is a Monday--the best day of the week, of course, for people who work--and I get a call from Mr. S. who is back in Malta taking good care of things.
R is getting ready and I'm starting to cry--hysterically--because Mr. S. tells me--on R's cell phone which she needs to take to work--that my application for self-employment has been denied. The letter gives no reason but says if there are any inquiries, I'm to email the director of the decisions.
Mr. S. thinks that it's because the date of application was only a day or two before my visa expired and they can't issue a permit--or maybe even process it if the visa isn't long enough for the application to go through.
But I figured it was OK to leave for the US right after applying. And told them in the application when I was coming back and when the visa would be renewed. I just don't know.
All I know is that right now it's been denied; I have to first email the director and G-d knows how long it will take to hear back from him--and then I have to pray that whatever was wrong can be corrected and I can reapply. And pay another $100 Euros, of course. But at this point, I would be glad to if I knew it was something simple.
Know what I mean?
So my job right now is to get over today and enjoy the rest of my time with R and B. And I will. I really will.
But just for now, I'm worried about what's going to happen, if I'll get permission to work in Malta--and if I'll get to stay there.
Because I've decided that Malta is my home now. Not the US, not NYC, not in New Mexico--but Malta.
And my apologies to everyone who has to deal with me today. But thanks for being there--including Mr. S. who is just the messenger from Malta.

Hi Guys, thanks for your support. It really does help.
Lynda--the letter didn't give a reason, but told me to email the director if I had questions. So I did. But today's a holiday. Who even knows when I'll hear back? And no, marrying someone from the EU does not qualify you to get a job here in Malta. It may make it easier to become a resident--but not get a job.
Hey Steve--I know you and Gill have had your share of frustration with the government--and you're from the EU! I just have to find out the reason my application was denied--and then just take it from there.

Chin up, I know that news like this can sometimes seem depressing. I also know that dealing with government departments here in Malta can be frustrating in the extreme.
Enjoy your time in the U.S.

PS Could this be avoided if you married a European?

So sorry that Mr S had to give you that bad news Ilene. If only they gave a reason at least you would know from which angle to tackle the problem. Can you find out the reason? There is always a way of getting around these problems in the meantime enjoy your time with the girls. Maybe the law firm you used could help. Take care

Thanks, Dee. I'll certainly try. I just hope it turns out OK in the end----Ilene

Hey Ilene, Glad you landed safely! But wow, what disappointing news on the job scene. Good luck in the re-application. Enjoy the rest of your stay!
