My Expat Friends—Some Entering; Others Exiting
Dee’s Birthday Wish
Dee (left), Me (middle) and Mike (right)
It’s almost a year now since I moved to Malta. And there are people leaving who came around the same time as I did. Unfortunately, these are people I really like.
There’s A and V, who moved to Malta the same day I did, used the same moving company in Malta and used the same rental agent. It was an intriguing coincidence and formed the basis of our relationship.
But Malta didn’t turn out to be what they expected, and they’re moving to Belgium—where they first met many years ago—to find bluer waters, I guess.
And then there’s Z—my best friend from Germany. We met by chance because our PC’s weren’t working at home and we needed the Internet. That day, the Internet was working at the McDonalds in St. Julian's. And there we were.
Since then, we call each other sisters. She’s the first I ever had. Z wants to stay here but can’t find a job. She doesn’t want to leave, but has to in a few weeks if a job doesn’t turn up. She promises that she’ll come back as soon as she can. I hope so; I don’t know what I’ll do without her.
But the other night, there was some good news: You know Dee from this blog? She’s a loyal and clever commentator. Well, she and her husband Mike—who now live in Panama and hate it—are considering Malta for their new home. They came to see Mr. S and me the other night on a trial visit to Malta. And it was Dee’s birthday. We had a makeshift birthday cake and one scented candle for Dee to blow out.
I think I know what she wished for.

Hi Andie,Good to hear from you again. I dont know of an American Womens Association in Malta. Would you like to start one? In answer to your question, I only write about things I know about--What is on the walls that you mention? I hate graffiti of any kind no matter what it says, if thats what you mean---Ilene

Hello Ilene,
As another American Expat in Malta I turn to your site for a different spin on Malta life. Does Malta have a American Womens Association?
Also wanted to ask, you never write about the items that effect the people, such as the writing on the concrete wall in St Julians near the Scotts.

Hi Alexandra--How nice! Yes, we would love to come visit you. I love Rabat,
but don't often get to visit it--Ilene

Hello Ilene, perhaps you and Mr. S would care to join us for a meal in a month or so at our new home in Rabat. We are still settling in and hope to be "presentable" by that time.

Hi Dee,
Can't wait to hear what you think about Gozo. Yes, we're all hoping for Z.
She and D have been in contact and this is a good lead. At least, it's a ray
of hope. Call when you get back xx Ilene

Bluer waters in Brussels ... probably not .... but hopefully some good fish ! People do come and go in our lives, Ilene, but it's a small world out there and paths surprisingly often cross...

*Hi Mary,
Thanks for your concern. Yes, I'm trying to find something for Z, as we all
are. I myself will be out of work during the winter because the language
schools are cutting back until next spring/summer. But I'm learning to
shift with the winds of Malta....Ilene*

What a coincidence. I may have a job for 'Z', coming up / becoming vacant in the next month(s) or so, in Sliema. (Maybe you or 'Z' could send me an eMail, so I can/could send some more details over.)

Good luck Dee. Sorry for you Ilene that Z is leaving. Maybe you could find her a job in the next week so that she can stay. You managed for yourself, I imagine you can help her out. Be well.
