If you don't mind, I'm going to use the word expats instead of expatriates.

 

There are lots of ways to meet expats before you even leave the US or wherever you hail from.  One of the best is through the Internet.  In fact, that's the way I've met all the expats I know so far.

 

Here's a good way to get started: Expat Focus.com has a lot of information on many different countries and numerous forums to meet people.  Click below to their link:

There is one Internet group I checked out that had lots of information on every topic of interest or concern to someone moving abroad.  However, in my case it didn't list Malta as one of the countries it covered.  Can you believe it?  This one is called Expat Exchange.com.  You won't find Malta on its map, but you can check it out for general information.  I am only providing hot links to those sites which meet my standards.  That means it has to list Malta as a country.

I really like this next one. You can find other blogs from Malta here (I met frequent commenter Steve from this) and blogs from expats from all over the world.

Join an Interest Group

I met H, one of my best expat friends, through an article on the Jewish community in Malta.  There was contact information, I followed through and H, an expat from England, came into my life.  Since then I've been seeing H every time I go to Malta.  And now H is awaiting my arrival in Malta as a permanent resident, inshallah--meaning G-d Willing in Egyptian.  (I hope she's happy once I get there.  I can imagine how nuts I'm going to drive her.)

 

I also just recently discovered an Egyptological society in Malta. I'm very excited to join this group, also run by another H who also happens to be another expat from England.  This group is also where I heard for the first time about American expats in Malta.

 

I really do think that I will find expats in Malta.  But it's funny, all the expats I meet say their best friends are the Maltese who they get to know.  That's very good because it shows how generally friendly the Maltese people are.  (Of course, not every single Maltese person is friendly. One Maltese woman told me not to put cat food on her doorstep when I was feeding about 20 stray cats on one street during a two-week stay in Valletta.  The nerve!)

One Year Later

I now meet regularly with a group of expats—Germans, British, French, Libyan—and even a few other Americans—every Friday at a bar or restaurant.  Since the place we meet often changes, I’m going to start posting where and when we’re meeting.  Any expat is free to come. Just show up or I’ll give you a number to call.

I've been reading your blog for the past six months when I decided I'd be going to Malta this fall to spend a year here. I don't think I've ever commented before though. Now I'm here and I was wondering if you people are still meeting up every other friday?

Hi MT, thanks for your question. Sorry, but there isnt much I can tell you about starting your own business here, except that for non-EU members, its usually easier to start a company than get a job.  But like everything else, there are a lot of rules you have to follow.  Ask your partner to help you get in touch with the ETC in Malta.  Heres the website: http://www.etc.gov.mt/.  Lots of luck----Ilene

Hi there came across your blog by accident, but found it very informative. do you have any further information on starting your own business in Malta.

brief history, from The Bahamas, lived/worked(finance) in Malta over 12 year period, returned home for 2 1/2 years, now looking to relocate back, finding a company(old employer relocated) to sponsor me again proving difficult, I have month and half to sort something out.

p.s. my Partner(he and I are not married) of 10+ yrs is Maltese.
